EDITORIAL Designer drugs are cheap synthetic agents that feed into the hedonistic needs of man. They are similar to the more familiar drugs of abuse. New examples appear constantly, e.g. PCP derivatives, alpha-pyrrolidinophenones and phenethylamines. The newest to hit the streets are the piperazines. These include 1-benzylpiperazine or BZP, 1-(3,4-methylene-dioxybenzyl) piperazine or MDBP, 1-(3-chlorophenyl) piperazine or mCPP (already employed as a probe in research), 1-(4-methoxyphenyl) piperazine or MeOPP, and 1-(3-trifluoromethylphenyl) piperazine or TFMPP. They are amphetamine (or amfetamine in modern parlance)-like 'party pill' drugs sold in various mixtures and often with other drugs thrown in. They are already known to be toxic and are one cause of the serotonin syndrome. Also of note, the piperazines need to be tested for deliberately, as they do not show up on most drug screens. We should cast our minds back some years and recall 1-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetra-hydropyridine (MPTP – a contaminant in heroin), which caused parkin-sonism in users. Manufacturers show every intention of staying ahead of legislation. This must say as much about the way we word our laws as about the people in clandestine laboratories. It is of note that mCPP is already established as a probe in psychiatric research.
